"OUR MEDICINE WHEELS"
Jeff Phillips & Liesbet Verstraeten
"Stone is the first ancestor"
"It is time to end separation. Time to gift back to the Earth all things that are of the Earth, to honour the spirit of life within the stone, the waters, the trees, the fish and all creatures of the land, to revere the ordinary and see its sacredness, to acknowledge the oneness of all that is, and will ever be."
Barry Brailsford, Song of Silence
"Our
tendency with approaching any cosmic or indigenous spirituality or
cosmology is to be open to it, to discover what we resonate with, while
respecting the fact that aspects we do not understand may have meaning
for or be understood by others in ways beyond our comprehension. We
honour all wisdom and try to understand and integrate as much as we
can. With respect to medicine wheels, for example, we honour the
'wisdom of the circle' and of the 'sacred hoop.' We think of ours as
stone mandalas honouring Mother Earth and the spirit of all indigenous
peoples; they are a focus of consciousness and a portal, if you will,
to dimensions of life, the dream-time, and eternal creativity."
Beginning in early 2009 Liesbet and I began constructing a series of stone medicine wheels at various special places where we've been able to spend time. These places are the 'property' of friends of ours, usually in quite remote and undisrupted locations.
Our medicine wheels bring together our indigenous art inspirations and love of stone and Mother Earth. Each medicine wheel contains some of our hand-painted rocks and represents a synthesis of ancient and contemporary wisdom, honouring tradition and innovation alike.
Originally a form native American spiritual technology, we've expanded on the idea to include art, colour and information; with our 'Mother Earth Temple', what started out as simply one medicine wheel evolved into a massive project spanning several dimensions of space, time, and creativity.
Enjoy these photos and maybe you, too, will be inspired to 'get stoned' and build your own medicine wheel and paint some rocks!
